Are music videos a bitch or what?

I was thinking about posting this on the end of the 'synch problems' topic, but after an entire day of fiddling around with echoes, micro cuts, bad dubbing etc i feel the need to vent my rage in a new section completly

Has anyone else tried to untangle one of these nightmares? Any tips?

Depending on what editing software you are using... I woud suggest laying down the music track first and then have one video track for all lip-sync shots and then another video track for other narrative/band/cutaway shots.

Place down the audio.
Sync up as much clips as possible...
Then on the timeline you will see what you have to fill in footage wise and have the freedom of placing in cutaways without messing up the sync.

When i made a music video i had the band play to their song playing on a cd player as i filmed.

In post i took every single shot and synced up the song to each one and then exported the shots into seperate files. This took forever to do but made it a lot easier in the long run. I could choose the opening shot from one file that lasted say 23 frames, then go to another file, move to frame 23 for the in point, choose an out point and then move to the next file/shot.

This worked perfectly for what i was doing to create an intial cut of the video.
If you are intercutting a bands performance and a narrative drama you could try using this method for the bands performance, and create a seperate edit of the drama, then combine it in a third edit.

I think MatJimMood had it down with his method. That's basically the method I adopt for music videos and my above mentioned atrocity.

EDIT: I don't think your software matters. I've cut videos in iMovie and they turned out well.

Of course, with multiple video layers, you could synch clips up on seperate layers and then you just have to delete clips to do the editing [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Hmmm.
I think that the state of music videos today is pretty poor, even in the present 'rock' scene.
The artist seem to be more concerned about making themselves look good rather than communicating the overall feel of the song.
